Bread or Democracy

Published by under Blogs,Palestinian politics

Daoud Kuttab International Herald Tribune

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2006

Former prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, finding himself in a bind during sensitive negotiations with the Palestinians in 1996, put forth a new condition: Israel – reputed to be “the only democracy in the Middle East” – would trade land for peace only when the Palestinians practiced real democracy. Stripping Israel of Excuses

Published by under Blogs

October 19, 2006 Edition 39 Volume 4

The Arab League’s peace initiative came some time after the eruption of the Aqsa intifada and followed a plan conceived of by then Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. The plan was actually leaked to the NY Times’ Tom Friedman in advance over a private dinner with the crown prince and was then adopted as an Arab peace plan at the Arab League Summit in Beirut in March 2002. How I broke down under interrogation

Published by under Blogs

October 19, 2006

I have tried for years to avoid traveling via the Tel Aviv airport, usually I try to leave out of Amman. But today I had to be in Palestine till Wednesday night and the only way to attend the conference I was invited to speak at was to leave from Ben Gurion Airport. I left Jerusalem in plenty of time, I thought, and sure enough at the very entrance of the airport the taxi I was riding in was stopped and we had to wait some 20 minutes until they thoroughly checked the car.

Next was the security check in. I tried to explain to the low level security woman checking my passport that I am a professional journalist.

The day I beat the (VIP) monopoly

Published by under Blogs

October 5th 2006 Jordan River Crossing Point

It was not my intention or my plans, but when the dust settled, I had finally succeeded in beating the ugly monopoly system on the Jordan river crossing point called VIP.

It all started when I called the Israeli manager of the bridge to find out what is the latest I can leave on the Allenby crossing point (called King Hussein Bridge by the Jordanians and Karameh crossing by the Palestinians)

How I smuggled a “terrorist” into Israel and the US?

Published by under Blogs

By Daoud Kuttab

An editorial note before I answer this question, I need to make a note that the word terrorist is put within inverted comas signifying that this is not my description.

To begin with I have to tell you the story of Haroon Abu Arra.  I met Haroon in 1996.  He was a student at Al Quds University’s nursing college.* The nursing school was chosen as the location of Al Quds Educational TV because it was within ,what was thought then- sovereign Palestinian territory.Haroon originally from the Jenin area, would hang around the studio and when we needed someone to man the nightly broadcasting of our educational station, he volunteered. Starting with the Individual

Published by under Blogs

Daoud Kuttab
Four and-a-half years ago I found myself in a difficult position. This week,  the circle has been closed. But I am afraid that I can’t say that I am pleased with the results.
Israeli troops decided that a five-storey building in Ramallah, belonging to Al Quds University, was needed for their security. They must have decided that the building which houses Al Quds University’s Institute of Modern Media, Al Quds Educational TV and the university’s archaeological department would make a perfect headquarters for the Israeli army’s engineering unit.

On April 2. 2002, troops that were in areas A of the Palestinian Authority as part of the defensive shield operation moved in to take over this strategically based location. They surrounded the building, detained the few people who were manning the educational TV (faculty and students had gone home) and after some hours sent them home and turned the building into their headquarters. My office, as the director of the institute, became the office of the unit’s commander, and the campus’ large basement cafeteria was turned into a temporary jail.

Five Reactions: Clearing the Way for Dialogue

by Daoud Kuttab

Amman, Jordan – I saw this problem brewing. On Al Jazeera, the Pope’s speech was distorted in the news bulletins through scrolling text on the bottom of the screen where it was repeated ad naseaueum, taken out of context and exaggerated. I then noticed five different types of reactions to the speech. Continue Reading »

After Lebanon a wise Palestinian strategy is needed

Published by under Blogs

Daoud Kuttab

As I predicted in earlier columns, Israel’s unilateral policy has proven to be one of the first victims of its war against Lebanon. Politically tarnished from the unsuccessful gamble in Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert clearly cannot stomach another ill advised gamble that will turn both the Israeli right and left against him.

The failure of Israeli unilateralism in both Lebanon and Gaza highlight the fact that peace cannot be decided by one party. For way too long Israelis have attempted to negotiate among themselves with respect to issues dealing with their Arab counterparts.

Palestinians must be ready for November 3rd

Published by under Blogs

by Daoud Kuttab

The outcome so far of the Israeli war on Lebanon is a mixed bag for Palestinians. The war reinforced the near blind support Israel enjoys in what both Israel and the US consider the war on terror. The Israelis clearly have a blank check to do almost anything they want to Lebanese or Palestinians so long as it is done in the name of a war against Hizballah or Hamas. Continue Reading »

Hard Crossings

Published by under Blogs

The following appeared in the NY Times web site TimesSelect under the heading in the line of fire. Some reactions to the article are also posted below:

Hard Crossings

By Daoud Kuttab, Ramallah, West Bank
Expressing its utmost concern at the continuing escalation of hostilities which has already caused hundreds of deaths and injuries on both sides, extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons …

Calls on Israel and Lebanon to help ensure humanitarian access to civilian populations and the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons …

The above are two excerpts from the recently approved United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Due to the political and military situation, I feel rather confident that the displaced Lebanese (and certainly the Israelis) will be allowed to return to their homes (though the condition those homes will be in — if they are even still standing — is another matter.
Nevertheless, I thought of the issue of displacement as I was traveling across the Jordan River from Amman to Ramallah using an international crossing point that bears three names; Jordan calls it the King Hussein Bridge, Israel calls it Allenby Bridge and the Palestinians call it Al Karameh Crossing Point.
